What It Takes
(Tyler/Perry/Child)
There goes my old girlfriend, there's another diamond ring
And all those late night promises I guess they don't mean a thing
So baby, what's the story? Did you find another man?
Is it easy to sleep in the bed that we made?
When you don't look back I guess the feelings start to fade away.
I used to feel your fire, but now it's cold inside
And you're back on the street like you didn't miss a beat,
Tell me what it takes to let you go
Tell me how the pain's supposed to go
Tell me how it is that you can sleep in the night
Without thinking you lost everything that was
good in your life to the toss of the dice?
Tell me what it takes to let you go.
Girl, before I met you I was F.I.N.E. Fine
but your love made me a prisoner, yeah my heart's been doing time
You spent me up like money, then you hung me out to dry
It was easy to keep all your lies in disguise
'Cause you had me in deep with the devil in your eyes
Tell me that you're happy that you're on your own
Tell me that it's better when you're all alone
Tell me that your body doesn't miss my touch
Tell me that my lovin' didn't mean that much
Tell me you ain't dyin' when you're cryin' for me
Tell me what it takes to let you go
Tell me how the pain's supposed to go
Tell me how it is that you can sleep in the night
Without thinking you lost everything that was
good in your life to the toss of the dice?
Tell me who's to blame for thinkin' twice
No no no no 'cause I don't wanna burn in paradise
Let go, let go, let go
I chose this song because it has some of the best examples of metaphoric
phrasing in it because they are not the ones we are used to seeing, and they
are used in very creative ways. Right off the bat, the comparison of an old
girlfriend to "another diamond ring" sets the tone and mood for the entire song
and the rest of the lyrics follow that lead with one clever line after another.
Take a look at some of the analogies like "I used to feel your fire but now it's
cold inside", and "your love made me a prisoner, yeah my heart's been doing
time".
One of my favorites, and a different way to say that someone has taken
advantage of you is this line: "You spent me up like money, then you hung me
out to dry". Now there's a phrase you don't see every day! The chorus itself
uses the repetitive approach for the beginning of the lines with "Tell me". The
first two lines go together very naturally because of the rhythm created by the
words used: "Tell me what it takes to let you go, Tell me how the pain's
supposed to go". You can see that it works because of how the words
"takes" and "go", match up equally with "pain's" and "go". Having two rhymes
like that, one in the center, and another at the end, is a great technique to make
the lines flow and fit together.
Other techniques used include rhetorical questions like "what's the story?, did
you find another man?" and "is it easy to sleep in the bed that we made". And,
the use of spelling out words to put added emphasis on them with the classic
example of "F.I.N.E. Fine". A lot of Aerosmith's songs have this kind of
creativity in their lyrics, but this one is especially entertaining, even when
you're just reading it, and that's why, to me, it stands out.
