"Breathe" gave audiences everything they didn't expect. I think it actually caught the whole music industry off guard! I wonder if that's what Holly Lamar and Stephanie Bentley set out to do, if so, it worked big time!

Several key ingredients make this song different from other radio hits, and the first place to start with is the writing of it. The strong and very catchy melody of the chorus are enough to make it stand out, but that's really just the beginning of everything "Breathe" has to offer. Taking a closer look at it, there is a definite contrast between the aggressiveness in the chorus and the laid back verses. That drives even more power behind the chorus and lifts it up to the next level.

An "opening up" technique is also used. It begins with a soft acoustical guitar and vocal, and very personal lyrics. There is no specific pre chorus, just musical "steps" between the last line of the verse and the chorus. But the real unique part of "Breathe" is the element of surprise that's used right after the chorus. Naturally, you would expect that when the chorus settles down with the line, "I can feel you breathe", it would just return to the verse. Instead, we are launched into a guitar driven melody that takes the song up another notch (or two!). This "extra ending" to the chorus is not only very unpredictable and effective, but it also makes a perfect transition to the next verse (or chorus) and keeps the excitement going throughout the whole song. If this were a movie, I would be using words like "edge of your seat" to describe it!

And would the song have been nearly as good without the right person singing it? Faith has the unbelievable ability to adapt her voice to any situation she is singing in. That's why it works so well when she goes from a personal verse to a huge chorus. Her voice is soft when it has to be, but it is also very powerful in other places. She captured and brought out the strengths of the song, while still maintaining the poetic, intimate nature of the lyrics. Based on the great writing and Faith's performance, I think that there is absolutely no way that "Breathe" would NOT have been a hit.
