Imagine being asked to write a song that is going to be the theme song for one of
the Rocky movies, knowing that it will be played side by side with the original
Rocky Theme and music written by Bill Conti.  Well, that's exactly what happened
to the band, Survivor, and they definitely "rose up" to the occasion!
Ask a bunch of different people why they like "Eye of the Tiger", and chances are
you'll get a bunch of different answers.  Some will say it's the guitar part in the
beginning, others will say it's the words, and then some will say it's that steady
drum beat.  Actually, all of them would be right!  The now famous guitar intro was
creatively written to set up for the "punches" (chords) that followed and led into the
first verse.  Notice how simple the beat is (2 and 4) throughout the song, but it's
consistency holds it together and drives it forward.
The lyrics were inspired by the film, Rocky III, along with the previous two Rocky
movies as well.  The whole "eye of the tiger" concept came from the central theme
of the movie, which was Rocky getting back the "eye", his edge in boxing.
Interestingly, Stallone himself is credited as contributing to the lyrics by Jim
Peterik because they played off of a lot of the dialogue and phrases that Sly wrote
for the movies.  Everything clicked in all the right ways, and "Eye of the Tiger" was
a hit, with Rocky III being the biggest movie of 1982.

For Rocky IV, the next movie in the series, Survivor was asked once again for a
song, and they went right back to that steady beat with the song "Burning Heart".  If
you listen, you can hear that it's virtually the same exact beat as in "Eye of the
Tiger" to a different melody and not as fast.  "Eye of the Tiger" was very much like
the Rocky character himself.  There was nothing fancy about his style in the ring, it
was just raw simplicity, heart, and fire.  And of course, that's all he needed.  The
song works for the same reasons and in the same ways.  It is simple, but filled
with passion and heart, so you can't help but get caught up in the emotion it
inspires.  Even today, people everywhere are using it to inspire their workouts.  But
even if you're not exercising, when you hear "Eye of the Tiger", it fills you with a
belief in yourself and your dreams, and reminds us that anything is possible.
