(Jewel Kilcher)

Using a classical sounding piano part, Jewel really sets the mood here, right from the beginning, and the intro alone is enough to get a response. It starts off quiet, complementing the poetic lyrics. She uses a lot of great metaphors and descriptiveness, which flow from one line to the next. The building strings in the background clue us in that this song is a lot more than just melodic verses.

This song changes dramatically and opens up in a big way as the tension builds and builds with the lines, "Well in case you failed to notice, in case you failed to see, this is my heart bleeding before you, this is me down on my knees." And then, the release comes in the chorus with drawn out syllables used to stress the meanings of the words and add even more drama and emotion. There is just the right amount of sadness and anger blended into the lyrics and it's easy to feel the part of the song. It's almost as if these things may have been bottled up inside of the person and now they are all finally coming out.

The cello part is so warm and telling, and it reflects the atmosphere and sentiment of the words really well. Listen to how long notes are used with a piano part that has a series of short notes. That produces the perfect backdrop. Extra emphasis is put on certain words in the chorus like "breaking" and "tearing", so the pain behind them is real. Jewel's vocals are honest, emotional, and powerful, especially when she repeats the phrase, "tearing me, you're tearing me, you're tearing me apart" towards the end. Also, the writing technique of using shorter notes and phrases in the verses and then longer ones for the chorus is applied in such a strong way. I think that Jewel is a very talented songwriter/performer,and I do enjoy a lot of her songs, but "Foolish Games" is the song that made me sit up and take notice. At the time, there wasn't anything quite like it on the radio, so it stood out and connected.
