(Brian Wilson, Mike Love)
This was a request that I received asking if I could include any Beach Boys songs
in the Songs section, so I chose "Good Vibrations" because it always stood out to
me as one of their strongest written songs that they released.
The Beach Boys had a gift for writing things that were so melodic and catchy, you
can't help but sing along, and this was no exception.  "Good Vibrations" is proof
that a solid melody can carry a song, especially when the lyrics match that melody
naturally.  Using one of their most famous techniques of repeating certain words
to add extra emphasis to the melody with "Good, good, good, good vibrations."
Notice the subtle, and maybe even unintentional setup for this technique at the
beginning of the song with "I, I love the colorful clothes she wears".
Most of the singles that The Beach Boys released were not bogged down with
lyrics, which gave the songs a sense of "freedom".  They seemed to just fly right
out of the radio, one line leading into the next.  "Good Vibrations" is no different
and if you look at the lyrics written out, you'll see that the verses take up about half
as much room as the verses.  Speaking of the verses, some of the lines are really
poetic.  Saying that the sunlight "plays" upon her hair, and describing the sound of
a "gentle" word on the wind that lifts the perfume from her hair.  What impresses
me the most about the way those lines are written is the fact that the melody sets
them up to be written using simpler verses and there were a lot of options to go
with, but they chose to make the lyrics deeper and more meaningful by treating us
to the descriptive prose.  In my mind, that desire to build and grow is what makes
a true "artist".  Taking the craft of songwriting to new levels was something that I
personally think was always on the mind of Brian Wilson.

And of course, "Good Vibrations" also features some of The Beach Boys' great
trademark harmonies that set the tone and keep the song moving smoothly.  It still
amazes me that whenever I hear one of their songs, I can never figure out which is
more fun to sing, the melody or the harmony.  (I usually end up trying to sing both
of them at the same time!)
