(John Rzeznik)
I think that John Rzeznik is often underrated as a songwriter and as a guitar
player.  With "Here Is Gone", he combines his extraordinary talent of each of them
to make two different styles work together in a unique, and very impressive way.
The song begins with a laid back guitar riff that has a natural jazz feel.  The
melody of the lyrics compliment it, and when you first hear it, you get the feeling
that it is preparing you for something.  You are right!  When the pre chorus starts,
we know that something is happening, and the song is moving into a new
direction, and then the chorus arrives, which uses a straightforward rock
progression of chords.  That switch from the jazz feel in the verse to the rock feel
of the chorus is what makes "Here Is Gone" stand out, and it's also what makes
it's emotional impact so great.
The transition back and forth between the two styles is smooth and seamless
because the way they are played makes them fit so well together.  Another
impressive thing about this song is that the melody takes its cues from the
musical arrangement.  Listen to how the chords are played in the chorus, and
then focus on the lyrics.  You'll notice that they mirror each other.  That's a very
good technique for writing melodies because they will be meant for that specific
chord progression from the start.
Angel/Aerosmith
Atlantic City- Bruce Springsteen
Breathe- Faith Hill
The Dance- Garth Brooks
Eye of the Tiger/Survivor

Here Is Gone- Goo Goo Dolls
I'll Be There For You/Bon Jovi
I'm With You/Break Away- Avril Lavigne/Kelly Clarkson
Independence Day- Martina McBride
Iris- Goo Goo Dolls
Suspicious Minds- Elvis Presley
Yesterday- The Beatles
So, the style of the verses and the preparation of the pre chorus make the chorus
more powerful.  That alone would have made this a hit, but Johnny and the Goo
Goo Dolls didn't stop there.  As the song is winding down, it blends the two
styles together one final time with a different melody.  The lyrics, "I know it's out
there, somehow here is gone" repeated tie everything together and brings the
whole song "full circle".  When it does end, you know exactly what "here is gone"
means as a phrase and you also know that you've just been on one fantastic
musical ride!
