There are some songs that I can listen to again and again, and never really get tired of. "Iris" is definitely one of those songs, and it's also one of those songs that can put a songwriter's career on a completely different level.

"Iris" was inspired by the movie, 'City of Angels', and there is a great acoustic version of it in the movie itself towards the end. Two elements came together to make this such a great song- emotion and lyrics. The really interesting thing about "Iris" is that the melody and the rhythm don't change that much from the verses to the chorus, but the emotion behind them do. When it first begins, the vocals are soft and more low key, it's almost as if he is talking. But when the chorus hits, there is much more emphasis placed on each syllable, and the style it is sung in is more deliberate. By the end, Johnny is almost screaming, "I just want you to know who I am".

The lyrics fit so perfectly within the melody that they flow throughout the entire song naturally. Speaking of the melody, it always reminded me of the melody in "Piano Man", by Billy Joel. It's simple and inviting, and you can count "1,2,3", "1,2,3", along with it the whole time. With "Iris", a full orchestra accompanies it, and during the instrumental, you can feel the impact of it, guided by several short stops, and one long one. The drama and anticipation builds and builds and you are just waiting for what's to come. Then, when the chorus hits again, it has twice the momentum behind it. John Rzeznik and the Goo Goo Dolls are experts at this technique, and it is almost like magic! Sure, "Iris" is a good enough song where just a normal guitar solo would have worked, but the way they chose to do it takes us to another place and that's what awesome writing is all about.
