Maybe I'm Amazed
(Paul McCartney)
Maybe I'm amazed at the way you love me all the time
Maybe I'm afraid of the way I love you
Maybe I'm amazed at the way you pulled me out of time
And hung me on a line
Maybe I'm amazed at the way I really need you
Maybe I'm a man and maybe I'm a lonely man
Who's in the middle of something
That he doesn't really understand
Maybe I'm a man and maybe you're the only woman
Who could ever help me
Baby won't you help me understand
Maybe I'm amazed at the way you're with me all the time
Maybe I'm afraid of the way I leave you
Maybe I'm amazed at the way you help me sing my song
You right me when I'm wrong
Maybe I'm amazed at the way I really need you
One of the reasons I chose "Maybe I'm Amazed" as one of the Lyrics
Revealed songs is because of its length, simplicity, and the way that
some of the lines were written. Just reading the lyrics, you can see
that it's written out about as plainly as it could be. This is very
important to note because today, there are a lot of songwriters who
feel that the more "clever" and fancy their lyrics are, the better they will
be, and as a result, they feel that writing that way is the only way to
write songs. While I will say that inventing great phrases that are
original in style and structure is very impressive, there is also
something to be said for a song that just lays out real feelings in their
purest form. Anyone reading the lyrics can understand what this
song means, and what it is saying. But Paul does get in some great
lines that also make you think about their meanings. That's the key.
It takes a balance between the two ways of writing.
Taking a closer look at the lines themselves, one that caught my
attention was "Maybe I'm amazed at the way you pulled me out of
time". The idea of being pulled "out of time" by someone can have
several different meanings for different situations, and it provokes the
thought of those reasons, which is what makes it such a great lyric.
Again, he's not disguising what he wants to say with most of the
words he uses. He just comes right out and says things like "Maybe
I'm a man and maybe you're the only woman who could ever help
me". That's the skill that Paul has in his writing. He can convey a
sense of vulnerability with them because he's not afraid to write that
way, yet he can also come up with some of the most creative
phrasings and metaphors you will ever read. "Maybe I'm Amazed" is
a masterpiece in its heartfelt simplicity, and the lyrics do an
exceptional job of matching the musical composition that
accompanies it.
