A great melody in songwriting can instantly connect with the listener
and cause them to want to hear more. For many writers, creating
melodic phrases is a challenging task, but mainly because of the
pressure there is, which is often self-imposed. There can be a lot of
second guessing involved with writing melodies where you begin to
ask yourself questions like, “is this catchy enough?”, or “will people
remember this?”
The key is to have a melody that will stick in someone’s head; one
that they will be singing even after the song is over. But there’s more
to it than that. The notes have to also match the mood of the lyrics and
accompany the words in a way that makes sense. When you think
about it, writing a song might seem to have a lot of variables, and that
relates to the pressure I spoke of earlier. However, your best songs
will come when there is no pressure at all.
If you listen to the radio or your CDs and focus on the melodies in the
songs, you will notice that many of them are simple. They might even
sound basic or “easy.” That’s because people connect with things
that sound natural. If you spend too much time analyzing a certain
phrase, you run the risk of complicating it and losing most of your
audience in the process.
Instead, try just saying the lyrics over and over again and listen for
what the syllables do naturally. Let them be your guide and follow
wherever they take you. Then, add emotion by exaggerating certain
syllables or shortening them depending on the sound of that
particular word. By allowing the original characteristics of a word or
phrase to be highlighted, your melody will automatically “click” with
people and they will identify with it.
Just remember that the best ideas will come when you are relaxed,
sometimes even subconsciously. So take the pressure off and enjoy
the process because there are great songs inside of you waiting to
come out! It also helps to be aware of the different techniques that are
really effective and will work for you. They are the ones that you can
use to write catchy hooks and choruses, find the right chords to
match the music in your head, and avoid any of the frustrating
mistakes that too many songwriters make.
