- George Harrison
What happens when a simple approach is taken to write about something that is
very complex?  The answer is "Something" by George Harrison.  Anyone who has
ever been on love knows that there are things about those feelings that just can't
be explained.  There's just "something" about that person that you react to and
connect with.  George took that whole idea and wrote about that "something".  It's
not something that can be described exactly or in detail, and he doesn't try to.
Instead, he just refers to it by writing lines about the things she does to cause the
feelings to get stronger.  "Something in the way she moves", "Something in her
smile she knows", "Something in her style that show me", etc.  It's a very unique
approach to take because it uses a certain level of vagueness.  But within the
descriptions, there are a lot of ways for the listener to relate.

Something
What It Takes
For example, it doesn't specifically say what it is about the way she moves, or what
it is about her style, etc.  But that's the beauty of why these lyrics work.  There
doesn't have to be a detailed explanation, it's just something about the way that
person, smiles, moves, etc.  My favorite lines are "Something in the way she
knows, and all I have to do is think of her".  Even the thought of that person does
something, still not easy to be explained, but it describes that feeling perfectly.
You may not know what it is exactly that causes that reaction by the thought, but
you know it's there, and it's something!  "You're asking me will my love grow, I
don't know, I don't know".  This is his way of saying that he really doesn't know
what's happening or what's going to happen, it's beyond all of that.  Once again,
he only knows that "something" is making him feel the way he does, and that gets
to the heart of love, relationships, and great songs.
