(Mark James)
"Suspicious Minds" was Elvis Presley's last Number One Hit.  It's very catchy and
upbeat, with a surprise tempo change in the bridge.
The subject of the song is kind of like a warning that a relationship may be in
trouble if the two people involved don't start trusting each other more.  And the
really interesting part about the way it was written is that it is almost like a
conversation.  The flowing and catchy melodic phrases open the song and guide
it through the chorus, but when the lyrics get a little more serious, the tempo
slows down deliberately, then picks back up again, (and the bridge uses a B
minor chord, which is one of the Magic Chords*).  What I've always liked about
"Suspicious Minds" is the fact that the verses are just as catchy as the chorus.  In
fact, after the bridge, the song doesn't even return to the chorus because it goes
back to the first verse and repeats it to a fade out.  Having verses that are melodic
in themselves, and not just a "way to get to the chorus", is a great technique that
will always keep people involved in the song.
As mentioned earlier, the time changes to a slower pace with the lyrics, "let our
love survive" etc., This makes the song more like a movie, where it slows down
for a certain amount of time, and then picks up, creating drama and an exciting
experience.  But the tempo changes don't stop there for this song!  If you listen to
the original version, it's slower than when Elvis performed it in concert.  I think the
song got faster and faster with each tour!  The faster speed really brings out the
emotion in both the verse/chorus and the bridge.  As always, Elvis' performance
is awesome as "Suspicious Minds" is both a great rock song and a great ballad
all in one.
