(Tony Arata)
What is it about "The Dance" that makes it such a special song?  Is it the lyrics,
Garth Brooks' performance, the emotion behind it, or the musical arrangement.
Honestly, it's all of those things, but of course, it all starts with the writing.
Tony Arata made sure that it would be an emotional song by the way he structured
the chords and melody line.  And the lyrics are a huge part of the reason this song
connects with so many people.  Take a look at them and you'll see that they will
work in describing more than one situation.  This means that people with different
situations will still be able to relate to it, and magically, it's as if the song was written
specifically for that situation every time.  That's just a reflection of how powerful the
words are and the thought that went into writing them.
At its core, "The Dance" is about loss and remembrance.  Whose loss and what
the memories are depend on who is listening and what they are going through.  If
it's an ended relationship or a funeral, "The Dance" is right there to capture the
moment and take you for an emotional ride.  When Garth was putting the video
together, he chose to show people who have died before their time because the
lines in the chorus really do give you something to think about, especially about the
way you live your life.  "My life is better left to chance.  I could have missed the pain,
but I'd of had to miss the dance."

The music production is simple, allowing the spotlight to be placed on the lyrics
themselves, and Garth's performance of them.  The strings are heavily
emphasized to add even more emotion, and the piano part is unbelievable, (just
listen to it at the end as the song is fading out).  No matter how many times I hear
"The Dance", it still holds up and affects me in some way.  And Garth got that song
on his first album- what a way to start off a career!
