It's been called the "greatest love song ever written". Written in 1936, recorded and debuted in 1955, revived in 1990, and still being appreciated today, I think it's safe to say that "Unchained Melody" is, and always will be timeless.

The music was composed by Alex North, who was very well known for his work in composing film scores, and the lyrics were done by Hy Zaret out of the affection he had for a girl who lived in his town. Mixing a film composer with real life experiences has always been a great formula for songwriting. A more modern example would be "The Heart Will Go On" from the movie, 'Titanic', (written by James Horner and Will Jennings). James Horner's emotional score for the movie is carried over to the song's intro and melody. With "Unchained Meldoy", the lyrics seem to have a melody of their own and the music just brings out their natural rhythm.

The melodic phrasing is so simple and inviting, that it can't help but be catchy. Using triplets and a "back and forth" technique, there is nothing complicated about them, and that's a big part of why they are so appealing. Plus, the lyrics say a lot of things that people have felt, but maybe not actually said out loud to a person. Wondering if time is going to change the way a person feels is a normal worry in a relationship, especially a long distance one, but how many times do you hear people admit it by saying, "time can do so much, are you still mine?" "Unchained Melody" is filled with such honesty and you can't help but admire someone who can tell the one they love exactly how they feel like that. It's that kind of expression of feelings that never goes out of style.

Throughout the years, there have been many different versions of "Unchained Melody", and they say a lot about how good of a song it is. The Righteous Brothers have one of the most famous ones, and they use a lot of strings and what sounds like a full orchestra backing them. Then there is my personal favorite, the one by Elvis. He just plays the piano and sings it, no other instruments are used. And the emotion is still there in a big way. That goes back to how well the song was written and how great of a performer Elvis was. Even today, "Unchained Melody" is being sung by a lot of top vocalists. It has proven that a song written with real inspiration will always be able to connect with audiences, no matter what the year is.
